Fish Camp
Education to ensure fisheries for the future
The day camp program provides youth ages 10 -14 with the opportunity to fish for different species, learn different angling techniques along with receiving exposure to land base knowledge with a focus on angling. The Day Camps will take place in July and August of 2024. Fishing destinations include the Red Deer River and Wellman Lake. At the fishing destinations topics covered included fish handling, fish behavior, catch and release techniques, boat safety, fishing regulations, and of course fishing techniques.
FISHING DESTINATIONS:
Wellman Lake: Day trips to Wellman Lake will consist of fishing from a boat – trolling, casting, jigging, etc. and learning various techniques to catch different species. Species targeted will be Walleye, Northern Pike, Smallmouth Bass, and Yellow Perch.
Red Deer River: Day trips to the Red Deer River will consist of primarily shore fishing and exploring a larger variety of warm water species. Species targeted will be Walleye, Northern Pike, Yellow Perch, Bullhead, Freshwater Drum, and Carp.
PROGRAM:
Each day camp will run from 8 am to 5 pm. Day Camp drop off and pick up will be at the Elbert Chartrand Friendship Centre in Swan River and transportation will be provided to fishing destinations. Participants are expected to be dressed appropriately for the weather with extra clothes. Meals, snacks and fishing gear will be supplied. Youth are welcome to bring their own rods and tackle. Program open to participants ages 10-14 who are eligible to attend a maximum of one day camp per fishing destination (unless a vacant spot is available). Limited spaces available for each day therefore placement is on a first come, first served basis. Spots are not guaranteed until contacted by camp coordinators.
